About The Size of Love
In the town of High Arch, New York, where the veil between the mortal and the mythical runs thin, Trick or Treat: The Size of Love tells the story of a love three thousand years in the making — and marks the beginning of a series, with a new book arriving every Halloween.
Susan Le Fey is an ancient witch — short, full-figured and voluptuous, with a vintage soul and millennia of memory behind a pair of knowing eyes. For all her power and all her years, there is one thing she has never had: a love built for her and her alone. That changes when Buddy enters her life — a man who is not born so much as intended, divinity-designed for one woman and one woman only. He is a soulmate in the truest, most literal sense: not matched by chance or chemistry, but made to fit her, body and soul.
What follows is not the story of two people learning to love each other, but of two people recognizing a love that was decided before either of them had any say in it. And the wonder of it is that the design holds. The more they come to know one another, the deeper the certainty runs: this was always meant to be.
"Wait... how is this possible?" Susan's voice was low and sharp, her brow furrowed behind her glasses as she approached. The outcome was what she'd have wanted — but this wasn't her spell. She'd know her own magic anywhere, which meant someone else's witchcraft was working in her house, without her permission. The thought put a dangerous edge in her eyes. Buddy backed away, but there was nowhere to go; she loomed larger with every unhurried step, until her massive red-painted toes settled inches from him, close enough that he could feel the warmth radiating off her skin. The whole scale of his new existence showed him exactly where he fit in her life — one step closer and he'd be a stain on her hardwood floor. Susan's attention turned away from the HOA, her ruined lawn, and whatever part Buddy might have played. She now studied him the way a witch studies a problem she intends to solve. She looked below her glasses and down her nose at him. Even her gaze reminded Buddy how small he really was, and it crushed him more than her toes could. "So," he managed, throat tight, torn between terror and something he'd never admit, "you didn't do this to me?"
At the heart of their bond is Buddy's gift — the ability to shift his size, to shrink down small enough to be held, to be carried, to be kept. When Susan absorbs him into herself, it sends her into a state of erotic ecstasy, her whole being lit up by the closeness of him. She feeds off his aura, his devotion, his love — and Buddy gives it unconditionally, content to be her treasured internal prisoner, because being kept by her is the purest expression of the purpose he was made for. For him there is no satisfaction like it: the deep, settled fulfillment of doing exactly what he exists to do.
Their roles are clear, and both are chosen freely and joyfully. Susan is the keeper, the protector, the vast and ancient force in whose care Buddy belongs. Buddy is the devoted, the cherished, the one who gives himself over completely. Neither diminishes the other.
And when Susan finally learns to shrink Buddy entirely at her own will, she discovers a delicious new power — one she wields with playful mischief, shrinking him at the most inconvenient moments just because she can. There's nothing Buddy can do about it. And there's nothing he would do about it, because he loves that she can.
But love does not exist in a vacuum, least of all in High Arch. The United Mythical Beings Council governs a world of succubi and goddesses, witches and warriors — Lilith, Circe, Isis, Mikayla — each with their own designs and dominions. And in the shadows, Camilla Valentina Van-Helsing schemes to resurrect an ancient hunter and purge the supernatural world entirely. Susan and Buddy's love will be tested against gods and monsters, councils and conspiracies, war and time itself.
Through it all, the truth at the center never wavers: some loves are written into the design of the world. Susan and Buddy are proof that when two souls are made for each other, what they build can outlast empires — and fit, perfectly, in the space of a single step.
